Take Action to End Homelessness in Massachusetts!
Join with the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless ( http://www.mahomeless.org ) in our campaign to end homelessness here in the Commonwealth. Since 1981, the Coalition has worked statewide to increase affordable housing opportunities, to expand homelessness prevention resources, and to protect the safety net for individuals and families at-risk and experiencing homelessness.
Tens of thousands of our neighbors from across the Commonwealth are struggling to avoid or exit homelessness. Tonight, approximately 1,600 families and 3,000 individuals will find themselves in shelters funded by the state's Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA). Thousands of others will try to find a bed in non-DTA shelters, double up with family or friends, or take their chances sleeping on the streets, in their cars, in waiting rooms of hospitals, or in the home of their abuser. These low-income families and individuals are caught at the intersections of low wages, high rental costs, and a limited supply of affordable housing. Without an infusion of housing and prevention resources to level the playing field, the number of people experiencing or at-risk of homelessness will not diminish.
With housing insecurity and homelessness continuing at crisis levels, the time to act is now.
