Take Action to End Homelessness in Massachusetts!

Coordinator: K.T. of Somerville

Join with the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless ( http://www.mahomeless.org ) in our campaign to end homelessness here in the Commonwealth. Since 1981, the Coalition has worked statewide to increase affordable housing opportunities, to expand homelessness prevention resources, and to protect the safety net for individuals and families at-risk and experiencing homelessness.

Tens of thousands of our neighbors from across the Commonwealth are struggling to avoid or exit homelessness. Tonight, approximately 1,600 families and 3,000 individuals will find themselves in shelters funded by the state's Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA). Thousands of others will try to find a bed in non-DTA shelters, double up with family or friends, or take their chances sleeping on the streets, in their cars, in waiting rooms of hospitals, or in the home of their abuser. These low-income families and individuals are caught at the intersections of low wages, high rental costs, and a limited supply of affordable housing. Without an infusion of housing and prevention resources to level the playing field, the number of people experiencing or at-risk of homelessness will not diminish.

With housing insecurity and homelessness continuing at crisis levels, the time to act is now. To see the Coalition’s long and short-term recommendations for ending homelessness in Massachusetts, please go to: http://www.mahomeless.org/legislative/FY08/MCH%20Transition%20Team%20Recommendations.doc.pdf and http://www.mahomeless.org/legislative/FY08/Priority%20fact%20sheet%202-2-07.doc .

To reach these goals, we need your help. To get involved, please call us at 781-595-7570 or e-mail us at kelly@mahomeless.org. We hope we can count on your collaboration as we continue the work to end homelessness!

Govenor Patrick, Until I became homeless I didn't know what it was like. Now I do and I hope my words can help this cause. I think that's one of the problems. Until you've experianced it for yourself, you have no idea how bad it is. Emotionally, mentally and physically it is horrifying. The vicious cycle of homelessness is debilitating. Consider this when you set the budget. Please remember the homeless. Also please consider the middle age women who raised a family but can't even get shelter because she doesn't have dependant children or isn't expecting. There's a lot of homeless middle age woman and there's little to no support for that age group! People with pets need shelters too. Sometimes their pet is their life line and they won't be seperated from them even if it means they have to be homeless. Their pet may be the last thing they have to hold onto. Thank you

I support this issue, since i have fallen in a situation where I am out of work due to restrictions because im 30 weeks pregnant. Now that I dont have enough money to pay my rent nobody is out there to help. How am I supposed 2 feel knowing I have nowhere 2 turn around here that I will bring a baby 2 this world and maybe not have a place for us 2 stay? Its temporary help.Everybody has its ups and downs.Nobody should be forgotten and everybody should be helped.

Since I’ve been Homeless myself I know first hand how it feels to not have a place called home. I see no reason why any family should have to be faced with this dilemma. The United States is one of the richest countries in the world. There is more than enough to go around. It’s time we made sure that everyone has a place called home.

Homelessness is a critical issue in Massachusetts. We need more affordable housing, but also need to support individuals & families through education & employment leading to career paths that will allow them to achieve economic stability. While Federal policy currently focuses on chronically homeless disabled individuals, as a state we should devote resources to ending family homelessness.

more and more people are suffering and dying out there and were not doing enough to stop it. Lets take action Massachusetts!

I highly reconize this issue. I live in Provincetown and at our special town meeting this past week, our planning board casted us out with alot of wordyness and made us feel detremential or below their standard. This made many year-round residents very much without a voice. We(our Local Housing partnership) put in a recomendation, which allows one more try, with in the alloted time, an hour, which the limited time of one hour, we had 12, not just 10 voters to sign our recomendation and put this back to the voters and we missed the count by only 10 voters. We where out voted not by year round resident but the seasonal residents/property owners. We could use areas of expertise on this matter. This housing(affordable) has been needed for way too many years.

You've said it all pal. It is called the american nightmare. Why don't the rich have some compassion for the people who used to be middle class, but now are forced to be in the poor bracket. Nobody can afford rent even after losing their home, which they shouldn't be forced into. There is money available for this issue, we just aren't informed about it. What about the politicians salary and not having to pay into social security, but are taken care of after they retire. They don't lose their homes. And don't just ignore this issue, open up your eyes and ears. On the verge of losing my home and sent e-mail to Governor, he's evidently too busy for people like us. A much dissapointed Bostonian.

Homelessness affects so many different population groups. The solutions need to be as broad as the the types of people affected. No one should be left behind.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs makes all of this so clear. Why is it still that we as educated people can not see that which is clear to the "dumb animals" on this planet. Having a safe and secure place to live is a stepping stone for a person to become the type of person we need in this world.
